    A Closer Look at the New Cage Map

    The cage map was the single most requested improvement from our user community, and Lab View 2.0 delivers a completely rethought version. Each cage now appears as a compact card showing the essential information at a glance: number of occupants, sex, strain, breeding status, and the next upcoming task. Color coding communicates status instantly. Green indicates cages with no pending actions, amber highlights cages with tasks due within the next 48 hours, and red flags overdue items that need immediate attention.

    You can arrange the map by rack position to mirror your physical vivarium layout, or group cages by strain, investigator, or protocol. Drag-and-drop reordering lets you organize your view to match how you think about your colony. If you manage cages across multiple rooms, each room appears as a separate tab, so you can focus on one space at a time without losing context.

    Clicking on any cage card expands a detailed panel showing the full occupant list with individual genotypes, the breeding history for that cage, health observations, and task history. From this panel, you can record observations, update census, or initiate a cage transfer without navigating away from the map view.

    Streamlined Data Entry

    We observed that researchers typically enter data in bursts: they walk through a room, check a dozen cages, and then sit down to log everything. Lab View 2.0 is optimized for this pattern. The new quick-entry mode lets you move through cages sequentially, recording observations with minimal taps. Auto-completion suggests common entries based on your history, and the system remembers your most recent inputs so that repetitive data, like a standard health score for a healthy cage, can be entered with a single tap.

    Batch operations are another major time-saver. Select multiple cages and apply the same action to all of them at once: update health status, assign to a protocol, schedule a procedure, or mark for weaning. A lab technician processing 30 weaning cages on a Monday morning can complete the task in minutes rather than clicking through each cage individually.

    Breeding Performance Dashboard

    The new breeding performance dashboard gives PIs and colony managers a high-level view of reproductive productivity across all active strains. Key metrics include average litter size, pup survival rate, inter-litter interval, and breeder utilization. Each metric is tracked over time, so you can spot trends that would be invisible in a static spreadsheet.

    For example, if your average litter size for a particular strain has been declining over the past three months, the dashboard highlights the trend with a clear downtrend indicator. You can drill down to see which specific breeding pairs are underperforming and decide whether to retire them, adjust husbandry conditions, or investigate potential genetic drift.

    The dashboard also includes a projection module. Enter the number of experimental animals you need and the target date, and the system estimates whether your current breeding program is on track to deliver. If there is a shortfall, it suggests how many additional pairs to set up and when, accounting for strain-specific gestational periods, expected litter sizes, and Mendelian ratios for the genotype you need.

    Population Forecasting

    Lab View 2.0 introduces a population forecasting tool that models your colony growth over the next 30, 60, or 90 days. The forecast accounts for active breeding pairs, expected litters, projected wean dates, and planned experimental usage. The result is a timeline showing your anticipated cage count and animal census at any future date.

    This is particularly valuable for facility managers who need to plan cage space allocation across multiple investigators. If two labs are both ramping up breeding at the same time, the forecast helps identify potential space crunches before they become emergencies. It also helps individual labs plan their budgets, since per diem costs are directly tied to cage count.

    Collaboration Features for Multi-User Labs

    Modern research labs are rarely one-person operations. A typical lab might have a PI, two postdocs, three graduate students, and a dedicated technician, all interacting with the same colony. Lab View 2.0 supports this reality with role-based permissions and real-time collaboration.

    Each user sees a personalized view filtered to the strains and cages they are responsible for, while PIs and colony managers retain a global view. Activity feeds show what happened in the colony today: which cages were checked, which litters were weaned, which animals were genotyped. This transparency reduces duplicated effort and ensures nothing falls through the cracks when shifts overlap.

    Tagging and commenting features let team members communicate directly within the context of a specific cage or animal record. Instead of sending an email that says "Check cage B-207, the dam looks thin," you can tag the relevant colleague on the cage record with a note and a health score, creating a documented trail that is far more useful than a loose email thread.

    Mobile-First Vivarium Experience

    Lab View 2.0 was designed with the vivarium in mind from the very first wireframe. The mobile interface is not a shrunken version of the desktop; it is a purpose-built experience optimized for the way researchers actually work at the cage. Large touch targets accommodate gloved hands. The cage map adapts to portrait orientation with a scrollable list view that prioritizes the information you need most: cage ID, occupant count, and the next pending task.

    Barcode scanning integrates directly with the mobile cage map. Point your phone camera at any cage card barcode, and the corresponding cage record opens instantly. From there, you can record a health check, update the census, or log a note without typing a single cage number. For labs that process dozens of cages per session, this eliminates the repetitive lookup step that consumes so much time with traditional data entry.

    Offline mode ensures that connectivity gaps in the vivarium never interrupt your work. All data entered while offline is cached locally and synced to the server the moment your device reconnects. You will see a subtle indicator showing how many changes are queued for sync, and the system handles conflict resolution automatically if another team member edited the same cage record while you were offline.

    User-Driven Design

    The redesign was driven by extensive user research and feedback from laboratories worldwide. We observed how researchers actually use colony management software and redesigned every interaction to be more natural and efficient.

    We conducted in-lab observation sessions at over a dozen research facilities, watching technicians, graduate students, and PIs interact with colony software in real time. The insights from those sessions drove every design decision in Lab View 2.0, from the size of tap targets on mobile to the order of fields in the data-entry forms.

    The performance gains come from a rebuilt data layer that fetches only the information needed for your current view rather than loading the entire colony dataset at once. Offline support has also been improved: if you lose connectivity in the vivarium, the app continues to function and syncs your changes when the connection returns.

    Export and Reporting Enhancements

    Lab View 2.0 introduces a completely rebuilt export engine. You can generate CSV, Excel, or PDF reports from any view with a single click. The report includes exactly the data visible in your current filtered view, so if you have filtered the cage map to show only your Cre driver lines with pending weans, the export contains precisely that subset. Custom report templates let you save your most-used configurations and regenerate them on demand, which is especially valuable for recurring compliance reports that need to be submitted monthly or quarterly.

    The PDF export is designed to be audit-ready. It includes a header with the generation date, the name of the user who produced it, and the filter criteria applied. IACUC reviewers and compliance officers can see at a glance exactly what data the report covers and when it was generated, which streamlines the review process significantly.
