    How to Bulk-Create Animals

Use Bulk Animal Creation when you need to onboard a shipment, register a freshly weaned litter, or add many animals at once without entering each one manually. It's the fastest way to get animals into Moustra when full per-animal genotype detail isn't needed yet — you can edit individuals later to add genotype, owner, or notes.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1

    Open the Animals page

Click Animals in the navigation menu to view your colony. If you already know which cage the new animals will live in, open that cage from Cages instead — bulk add can pre-fill the destination.

    2

    Start a bulk add

Click Add Animals in the top-right of the Animals page, then choose Bulk from the dropdown. The bulk creation dialog opens with fields for the shared attributes you'll apply to every animal in this batch.

    3

Pick cage, strain, source, and IACUC protocol

Select the destination Cage where the new animals will be housed, then choose the Strain, Source (e.g. JAX, in-house breeding), and IACUC Protocol that applies to all of them. These shared fields are applied to every animal in the batch.

    4

    Enter quantity and sex breakdown

Set the total Quantity and break it down by sex — for example, 5 male, 3 female, and 2 unknown. Optionally enter a shared Date of Birth so age tracking is accurate from day one.

    5

    Save the batch

Click Save to create the records. Moustra generates one animal per slot in your sex breakdown and assigns tag numbers automatically using your lab's tag-numbering scheme.

    Pro Tip

You can edit individual animals afterwards to add genotype, owner, or per-animal notes — bulk creation is just the fastest way to get them into the system.
