How to Wean a Litter
Wean a litter to separate pups from their parents at the appropriate age and promote them to individual animal records in Moustra. The system calculates a recommended wean date when the litter is created, and you confirm counts by sex and assign cage destinations from the litter page.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Open the Litter page
Click Litter in the navigation menu.
Find the litter to wean
Search or filter for the litter you want to wean. Look for litters that are at or near their calculated wean date (shown on the litter record).
Pro Tip
Click the litter row to open its full details.
Start the wean process
Click the Wean button or Wean Litter action on the litter page.
Confirm pup counts and sex
Review the total number of pups and their breakdown by sex (Males and Females). Adjust the counts if any animals did not survive to weaning.
Pro Tip
The system auto-fills the counts from the litter record; verify they match your cage.
Assign destination cages
Select the destination Cage or cages for the weaned pups. You can split males and females across different cages if desired.
Confirm the wean
Click Confirm or Wean Now to complete the weaning. Each pup becomes an individual animal record and moves to the assigned cage(s).
Pro Tip
Once weaned, pups appear in the Animal page and can be tracked, genotyped, or used in future matings.
